2020년 10월 9일 한글날(Hangul Day) 구글 기념일로고 구글두들은 국내 아티스트 최지수(Jisu Choi)의 작품이다.
10월 9일은 세종대왕이 ‘훈민정음(訓民正音)’을 창제·반포하는 것을 축하하는 ‘한글날’이다. 대한민국의 5대 국경일, 공휴일로 지정돼 국기를 게양해야 하는 역사적으로도 의미 있는 날이다.
한글은 세계에서 유일하게 창제 이유, 창제 원리, 만든 시기, 사용 방법 등이 기록으로 남아있는 문자로 가치 또한 높게 평가된다.
1990년부터 유네스코에서는 문맹 퇴치 공로상을 ‘세종대왕 문해상’이라는 이름으로, 세계 각국의 문맹 퇴치사업에 공이 많은 개인이나 단체에 시상하고 있다.
1997년에는 유네스코 ‘세계 기록 유산’으로 등재됐다. 이처럼 세계적으로 그 우수성을 인정받은 과학적인 언어 한글을 기념하는 날이 바로 ‘한글날’이다.
ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ을 일컫는 자음은 소리를 내는 기관의 형상을 본떠 만들었다. ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ를 일컫는 모음은 하늘, 땅, 사람을 본떠 만들었다. 모든 발음을 문자로 표현하는 것이 가능한 이 둘의 조합은 그래서 과학적이고 철학적인 글자다.
훈민정음(訓民正音)의 한자에는 ‘백성을 가르치는 바른 소리’라는 의미를 지니고 있다. 또한, 1443년(세종 25년) 세종대왕이 비밀리에 창제한 언문 28자를 뜻한다.
3년간 체계적인 연구를 통해 1446년(세종 28년) 9월, 훈민정음의 해설서인 ‘훈민정음해례본’을 완성하면서 훈민정음을 반포했다.
한글이라는 이름은 1910년대 주시경을 중심으로 한국어 연구가들이 가갸글, 언문, 반절 등으로 부르던 훈민정음을 ‘으뜸가는 글’, ‘하나밖에 없는 글’이라는 뜻으로 부르게 된 데서 비롯됐다.
지난 1990년부터 2005년까지 공휴일이 너무 많다는 이유로 한글날은 법정 공휴일에서 제외되었다. 산업 발전에 장애가 된다는 경제 단체의 문제 제기로 인해 한글날이 단순한 기념일이 된 것이다. 그러나 한글 관련 단체의 꾸준한 한글날 국경일 운동을 통해 2006년부터 다시 국경일 및 공휴일로 제정되었다.

Today’s Doodle, illustrated by South Korea-based artist Jisu Choi, commemorates Korea’s Hangul Day (한글날). One of the world’s only official holidays dedicated to a writing system, Hangul Day celebrates the invention of Korea’s alphabet known as Hangul.
The Hangul alphabet was first unveiled in 1446 by the Choson dynasty’s King Sejong. More than 500 years later, it is still considered a remarkable achievement, even by modern linguistic standards. The 24-letter alphabet remains the only writing system in the world that separates sentences into words, syllables, individual sounds, and elements of articulation like exhalation or voicing. Despite its sophisticated representation of complex spoken language, the writing system is noted for its elegance and simplicity; in fact, it’s said that a dedicated beginner could learn Hangul in just a few hours!

Guest Artist Q&A with Jisu Choi
Today’s Doodle was illustrated by South Korea-based artist Jisu Choi. Below, she shares her thoughts behind the making of this Doodle:
Q: Why was this topic meaningful to you personally?
A: As a person who makes media, understanding and interpreting the cultural background of South Korea is very important. The elements that make up the foundation of our culture vary widely. The writing system is a very important element of culture, so it was a pleasure to commemorate this historic and culturally precious heritage.
Q: What were your first thoughts when you were approached about the project?
A: I wanted to make a joyful image. I like to tell stories humorously. I also wanted to include the fact that the writing system was made through the efforts of several people with specific goals.
Q: Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle?
A: I thought of a lot of the scholars. Of course, Hangul was created due to King Sejong’s leadership. However, I wanted to give credit to all those who helped develop the system.
Q: What do you hope people take away from your Doodle?
A: To celebrate the beauty of the process of striving for good, quality culture.
